Beware of directory scams.
Exhibitors at every major trade fair receive unsolicited "directory listing" forms. They are not from Koelnmesse, and signing one is legally binding.
How the scam works
The mailing looks like a free update of your listing: "Updating is free of charge" in bold at the top. The fine print at the bottom says that signing the form is a binding insertion order, typically for three years at around 995 euros a year, automatically renewing. The sender then pursues the "debt" through collection agencies.
Names to watch for
- World Business List (The Netherlands)
- World Business Guide / International Directories Group (Madrid)
- Expo-Guide, Construct Data, Fairguide
- Any "international fairs directory" asking you to fax or sign a form
These organizations are not part of Koelnmesse or any of our worldwide trade shows. Koelnmesse condemns their activities and regards them as an improper intrusion into the business affairs of Koelnmesse and our clients. We recommend destroying any communication you receive from them.
If you receive one
- Do not sign, fax or return the form, and do not pay any invoice that follows.
- Forward it to [email protected] if you are unsure whether something is official.
- See the industry warning from the International Association of Exhibitions and Events: iaee.com.
